The York College Women’s Business Center Organization (WBCO) will present a luncheon workshop by Dr. Wanda Filer titled “Many Hats, Many Opportunities, Many Chances to Learn,” at 11:30 a.m., Feb. 2, in Alumni Hall in the West Campus Community Center.
The cost to attend the workshop is included in the annual WBCO membership. The fee for nonmembers is $20 payable with advance registration, which is required by Jan. 27. Women today balance many roles in their personal and professional lives. Filer will share her insight and will discuss how to remain open to opportunity and embrace the many chances to learn. She will be joined by special guest Ruth Koup, founder and CEO of Dress for Success, a Dauphin County organization that provides work clothing for women referred by nonprofit and government agencies.
Filer is a family physician and founder of the Strategic Health Institute. She earned her medical doctorate from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and completed her residency in family practice at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, N.J., where she also served as chief resident. She completed her MBA in 2009 at Pennsylvania State University Executive MBA Program.
Filer has a part-time clinical practice at East York Family Medicine and served as Pennsylvania's first physician general. She has worked extensively with the media including 18 years as a health correspondent for WGAL-TV in Lancaster, Pa. Through the Strategic Health Institute, she combines the arenas of public policy, public health education, advocacy, and the media to build awareness of today's health issues and the need for change. She also serves as a director for York Traditions Bank and as CEO of FUSA Energy LLC, a start-up alternative energy company focusing on wind and solar solutions for residential and small to medium businesses.
Filer is actively involved with many organizations, both nationally and on the state level, in health improvement and advocacy development. Her areas of focus include health services for underserved and emerging populations, immunization education and process improvement, family violence and sexual assault, and public health improvement initiatives. She lectures extensively on topics regarding public policy, public health, patient access and healthcare trends.
Filer is a past president of the PA American Cancer Society, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and current chair of Visions of Hope for the PA Coalition Against Rape. She has won numerous state and national awards for her health advocacy efforts, especially around cancer control and family violence issues.
The Women's Business Center Organization was established in 2007 as an initiative of the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College.
