September 15, 2009

A University of Denver religion professor will be the first guest lecturer during the Global Humanities Lecture Series at York College of Pennsylvania.

Carl A. Raschke, an internationally recognized professor of religious studies, will discuss the ways in which Christianity challenges and is challenged by globalization at 7 p.m., Oct. 6, in the Collegiate Performing Arts Center.

Presented by the Department of English and Humanities, the Humanities Lecture Series will this year explore the humanities in a global context. All lectures are open to the public free of charge. For more information, contact Victor Taylor at vetaylor@ycp.edu or call 717-815-1349.

Raschke, who holds a doctoral degree from Harvard, has written more than 500 articles, columns and essays in a variety of journals, magazines and newspapers. He is the author or editor of more than 20 books, including his recent volume titled “GloboChrist: The Great Commission Takes a Postmodern Turn.”

For Raschke, Christianity is on the verge of a new era, a “global era.” His scholarship combines traditional religious beliefs with postmodern philosophical concepts, and it is this synergy that makes him a leading figure in the field of religious studies today.

Raschke’s areas of expertise are wide-ranging. He regularly teaches courses in theories and methods of religious study, religion and the digital age, religion and philosophy, cults and the occult and classical religious thought.
