Student theatre troupe to present 'Our Town' Feb. 16 - 20

February 5, 2010

York College’s student theatre troupe, The Players, will present a modern version of Thornton Wilder’s classic play “Our Town” at 7 p.m., Feb. 16-20, in the Perko Playpen Theatre. The performances are open to the public free of charge.

Senior Jason Hinkle, a theatre major from York, directed the play. Unlike Wilder, who set the play in the early 1900s, the young director will present the three-act play as if it took place between the late 1990s and today.

Jamie Caponera, a senior mass communications major from Valhalla, N.Y., plays the part of the stage manager, a character who introduces the setting – Grover’s Corners, N.H. – and presides over the action on the stage from the outside looking in.  A classic American play performed on an almost-bare stage, “Our Town” is about the mundane but pleasant lives of the Gibbs family, the Webb family, and their neighbors. The plot focuses on the two families and the love interest between the eldest Gibbs son, George (played by Doug Umberger, a first-year elementary major from Bordentown, N.J.), and the eldest Webb daughter, Emily (played by Sara LiPira, a first-year theatre major from Grasonville, Md.)

The York College Players produce plays and occasionally musicals from the classic and modern repertories for the education and appreciation of the college community. Funded through the Department of English and Humanities, Players is open to all full- and part-time students who meet academic criteria.
