Jazz Ensemble, College Community Orchestra to Present Concerts

November 9, 2009

The York College Jazz Ensemble and the York College Community Orchestra will present concerts in December.

The Jazz Ensemble will perform at 3 p.m., Dec. 5, in the Collegiate Performing Arts Center, and the York College Community Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m., Dec. 6, in DeMeester Recital Hall. Both events are open to the public free of charge.

The Jazz Ensemble will present “Blue Train” featuring soloists and music industry/recording technology majors Chris Grasso, a senior from Eatentown, N.J.; Julian Crocamo, a junior from Middlebury, Conn; Kevin Montgomery, a junior from Ephrata; and Greg Sullivan, a junior from Ferndale, Md. The ballad “The Nearness of You” will feature vibraphonist Jacob Beers, a sophomore music industry/recording technology major from Hatfield, and the classic 1970s rock arrangement, “Funk #49,” will feature trombonist James Rohrbaugh, a senior elementary education major from York. The program will also include “Shiny Stockings,” “Flithy McNasty,” “Maiden Voyage” and several other pieces.

The York College Jazz Ensemble, conducted by professor Jeff Stabley, is one of the oldest musical groups on campus. The ensemble performs music written by the jazz greats including Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Students are featured in spontaneous improvisations that build off of the solos of the past masters of jazz. The group performs in various jazz idioms such as Swing, Bebop and Fusion. For more information, contact Jeff Stabley at jstabley@ycp.edu or 717-815-1354.

“I am very proud of YCP’s Jazz Ensemble,” Stabley said. “This concert will be an afternoon of traditional jazz, modern jazz and a jazzy interpretation of a classic rock song.”

The York College Community Orchestra will present “Procession of the Nobles,” “A Christmas Festival,” “Selections from the Nutcracker Suite,” “Overture” and several other pieces.

The Orchestra, conducted by professor Zachary Levi, is a full symphonic orchestra. The group includes music majors and musicians from York and the surrounding area. The Orchestra performs works of the masters from the 18th century to the present. Faculty and student soloists are often featured on the programs. For more information, contact Zachary Levi at zlevi@ycp.edu.

“Having a college community orchestra gives members of the community a chance to continue their love of music making,” Levi said. “We are also able to draw in members of the student body who are not always music majors, but who still enjoy performing in an ensemble.”
