David C. Driskell is an internationally renowned artist, art historian, collector, curator and emeritus professor whose life’s work has deeply enriched and expanded the scope of American art. Driskell’s paintings and collages can be found in major museums and private collections around the world, and his scholarly contributions as an art historian and curator have made him one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of African American art.

In 1976, as guest curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Driskell established a benchmark for the study of African American Art with the exhibition “Two Centuries of Black American Art: 1750-1950.”  In 2000, Driskell received the National Humanities Medal from President Bill Clinton for his contribution to American culture. In 2001, The University of Maryland established The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. A major publication detailing Driskell's life and work, David C. Driskell: Artist and Scholar by Julie L. McGee, was published in 2006.

This exhibition celebrates the importance of David C. Driskell as an artist and collector. The Brossman Gallery features a sampling Driskell’s recent work, including the piece “The Farmer and His Wife” which was created while in residency in Oaxaca, Mexico, and has been purchased by York College of Pennsylvania.  The Cora Miller Gallery features selections from Driskell’s comprehensive collection of African American Art, including works by Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, and many other major artists.

All events are open to the public free of charge.
