9:00 AM

York College Galleries

Brossman Gallery - New Works

Cora Miller Gallery - Selections from The David C. Driskell Collection

Jan. 25 - Feb. 26, 2010

Opening reception/lecture:  7 p.m., Jan. 28

David C. Driskell is an internationally renowned artist, art historian, collector, curator, and emeritus professor whose life’s work has deeply enriched and expanded the scope of American art. Driskell’s paintings and collages can be found in major museums and private collections around the world, and his scholarly contributions as an art historian and curator have made him one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of African American art. In 1976, as guest curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Driskell established a benchmark for the study of African American Art with the exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art: 1750-1950.  In 2000, he received the National Humanities Medal from President Bill Clinton for his contribution to American culture. In 2001, The University of Maryland established The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. A major publication detailing Driskell’s life and work -- David C. Driskell: Artist and Scholar by Julie L. McGee -- was published in 2006.

This exhibition celebrates the importance of Driskell as an artist and collector. The Brossman Gallery features a sampling his recent work, including the piece “The Farmer and His Wife,” which was created while in residency in Oaxaca, Mexico, and has been purchased by York College of Pennsylvania. The Cora Miller Gallery features selections from Dr. Driskell’s comprehensive collection of African American Art, including works by Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, and many other major artists.

Driskell will give a public lecture on his life’s work in the DeMeester Recital Hall on Thursday, January 28 at 7p.m. A gallery reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

Gender in the Global Context
3:30 PM

The Global Humanities Lecture Series

Humanities 218

Panel Discussion with York College faculty Dr. Julie Amberg, Dr. Rory Kraft, Dr. Deborah Vause, and Dr. Xiaofei (Sarah) Li.

Gender as a category of academic study has been investigated by disciplines as various as literature, philosophy, sociology, biology, economics, and history. Although differing in their approaches to its study, practitioners in these fields share an understanding of gender as an overarching socio-cultural variable that profoundly affects human life. Internationally, gender has been studied for its significant role in critical human rights issues, including world poverty, environmental destruction, armed conflict, and reproductive rights.

Using their respective disciplinary approaches, participants on this panel will examine some of the ways in which the notion of gender informs world politics, literature, ecology, and ethics.
